The bridge was silent, save for the background hum of the consoles which hung irritatingly just within the edge of conscious perception. K'pajek sat staring intently at his screen, examining some strange electromagnetic spikes which had been appearing at seemingly random intervals for the last few minutes. There didn't appear to be any natural cause, it was almost like...

His contemplation was interrupted by the turbolift doors swishing open, and the majority of the next shift arriving to replace the weary duty officers.

Faces visibly lifted around the bridge: it had been a long night. A young officer K'pajek didn't recognise spun to greet Commander Lyla, but her face immediately changed from its eager formal expression to one of shock and alarm.

A moment later, and the alarm spread across all the faces in the room. Where Lyla had stood there was the faint silver glimmer of a transporter...

"REPORT!" shouted Daran, as officers scrambled to their consoles.

"I'm reading energy emmissions, and what may be a warp signature." called K'pajek, as he urgently and rather too vigorously punched commands into his console. "Almost certainly a cloaked ship!"

"RED ALERT! ALL HANDS TO THEIR STATIONS!"

The claxons sounded, and within moments the vessel was battle-ready, prepared to repel an assault. But none came.

"Commander, I am no longer detecting any energy emissions, it appears the vessel has left the area."

"Where have they gone?" asked Morris, who had entered the bridge during the report.

"Unknown sir, sensors are not detecting a plasma trail. THERE! An energy surge on long range sensors, bearing 182 mark 12." shouted K'pajek enthusiastically.

"Take us there!" commanded Morris.

"Aye sir!" replied ensign Reese.
